eBooks

We may not all love eBooks, but you can't deny their perks!

eBooks are open 24 hours

Anytime access!

eBooks are available 24/7, and 99.9% of them are available even if other people are reading them at the same time. All of GCC could read the same page of the same eBook at the same minute!

People around the globe

Anywhere access!

You can read eBooks anywhere on campus if you are on the network, or anywhere in the world if you are on the VPN. Some eBooks even offer downloads, allowing you to read them offline.

People seeking eBooks

You can't lose one!

Unlike a print library book, you can't lose or damage an eBook. If you lose or damage your device, you've got bigger issues! But you can jump right back into that eBook on your new device.

Tall building with books

There are so many!

If all of GCC's eBooks were print books, we'd need to add another 5 floors to Buhl library to house them all. The library owns or licenses over 275,000 eBooks across all disciplines. There are also many open access or free eBooks available as well. Give them a try!

Finding eBooks

There are several ways you can locate eBooks:

  1. Search in Discovery. All of the eBooks in our packages are findable here.
  2. Search in Henry. A lot of our most important eBooks are included in the book catalog to make them more accessible. You may encounter these as you search for print books.
  3. Go right into the eBook packages and browse or search. You can go to the eBooks A-Z list or find packages in the Articles & Databases A to Z list; here you can easily filter to eBook collections. EBSCO eBooks is the largest collection, but there are several others focused on publishers or subject areas.

Using eBooks

All eBooks in the library’s packages are available for online reading, usually with at least some printing or saving of sections. EBSCO eBooks do these things as well but are more complex. Depending on the eBook, you may be able to:

  • print, save, or copy a little or a lot. The page limits are set by the publishers and so vary with each book
  • read or download in multiple formats. The PDF format most closely aligns with how the original print pages looked, but the EPUB format allows more flexibility with sizing and display on your screen
  • check out” a copy of the eBook temporarily, which allows you to download it to read from an approved app for a limited period of time.

The Power of Small Changes

“Too often, we convince ourselves that massive success requires massive action… The difference a tiny improvement can make over time is astounding. Here’s how the math works out: if you can get 1 percent better each day for one year, you’ll end up thirty-seven times better by the time you’re done.”
from Clear, James. Atomic habits: an easy & proven way to build good habits & break bad ones. New York : Avery, 2018. Career Services Library PersDev BF335 .C525 2018

Stockings for Veterans graphic

Buhl Library is proud to once again coordinate the seasonal Stockings for Veterans event on campus, in partnership with GCC Mortar Board and the local Rose and Black Funeral Home. This is an opportunity for you to help homeless veterans at area shelters by contributing to gift stockings filled with personal care items.

Here are three ways you or your campus group can help:

  • Sign up to fill one or more whole stockings
  • Drop off individual items to the box in the library
  • Drop off items or purchase items at the bookstore

Visit the event website for the sign-up form, a list of requested items, and more details. The deadline to drop off items is December 6th so that stockings can be distributed before Christmas. Please help support this cause and make this year's event a success!

Staff Updates

David Roberts, who served as Public and Outreach Services Librarian in Buhl Library for the past two years, has moved on to a position at Hiram College in Ohio. You may have interacted with David at the Reference Desk, and behind the scenes he produced the library's newsletters, social media content, and programming. We wish David good luck!

Speaking of the Buhl Library staff, they didn't REALLY dress as librarians for Halloween, did they? Yes. They. Did. BOO!

Words of wisdom from C.S. Lewis:

Whenever you are fed up with life, start writing: ink is the great cure for all human ills, as I have found out long ago.
