Draw Where You're From!

We're excited to launch our latest library challenge and we hope you'll join us. This time around we're asking you to draw your home state and label as many places as you can on the map. The best thing is as part of the prize package this time around you can choose from one of four different origami animals!

Stop in the Learning Commons and grab a copy and share your art and geography skills with us!

Stockings for Veterans!

Buhl Library and GCC Mortar Board are collecting stockings for a drive organized by Rose and Black Funeral Home. Stockings will be filled with personal care items and donated to Pittsburgh's homeless veteran's shelter.

You can help in one of two ways: You can request stockings and then return them filled with donations or you can donate individual items as well. Last year we collected over 200 stockings and we're hoping to surpass that total this year with your help.

The drive is on until December 5 and you can find more details and request your stocking here!

Book Sale Is Booked!

New Faculty Publications

Professor of history emeritus Gary Scott Smith recently published his latest work Strength for the Fight: The Life and Faith of Jackie Robinson. In this religious biography of Robinson, Smith chronicles the important role of faith in Robinson's life, from his childhood to his groundbreaking baseball career through his transformative civil rights work, and, in the process, helps to humanize the man who has become a mythic figure in both sports history and American culture.

What’s the 411 on the Huddle Room technology?

Each of the Huddle Rooms in the Library’s Learning Commons is equipped with a 50-inch Microsoft Surface Hub 2S that offers 4K+ resolution for incredible picture clarity and a 3:2 aspect ratio that maximizes screen size reducing your need to scroll. A microphone and speakers are on the sides of the screen to capture and share audio, while a smart camera on top of the device provides a 90-degree view of the room, using artificial intelligence to capture movement so that remote participants can follow physical movements in a Teams meeting. Finally, each Hub includes a pen designed like a regular whiteboard marker, enabling users to comfortably select and ink objects and documents on the device.

What is the biggest benefit of using a Surface Hub 2S?

In a word, collaboration. Teams can use Surface Hub technology to meet, design, edit, co-create documents, and share ideas, whether physically together or in different locations.

What apps can I use on a Surface Hub?

Each Hub includes several apps and the Edge browser, but if you need to use an app that is not available, connect your laptop to the Hub to display additional content.

Do I need to sign in to use a Surface Hub?

No. You are welcome to use the device anonymously, but if you want to access, save, or share files on the device, you will need to sign in. And, whether you sign in or not, you always want to END SESSION before you leave the Hub so that your files or temporary work are cleared before the next user session starts.

Can I use a Surface Hub even if all the Huddle Rooms are being used?

Yes! The library offers two mobile Hubs that are available in the Learning Commons for use. These can be plugged in or used on battery power for two hours. Both mobile Hubs can be reserved by inviting the device to your meeting. A list of Surface Hub names is available on our website for your convenience.

Is there a time limit for using the Huddle Rooms?

Yes, we ask that when you reserve a huddle room you limit your reservation to a 2-hour block. While reservations aren't required, if you're using a huddle room without a reservation and someone reserves it while you're in there they have the right to the room at that time. Additionally, we ask you to not make a reservation slot a recurring event that way everyone has fair access to the rooms throughout the semester.
