Library Assessment Plan

Library Space Assessment Goals

A vital part of the Library's Mission is to "provide its students, faculty, staff, and administration with the resources necessary to support their educational needs and objectives." In order to accomplish this, Henry Buhl Library seeks to achieve the following goals with respect to Library Space:

Goal 4: Provide work and study space for a diverse community of learners

In order to accomplish this library goal, we have established the following objectives for Library Space:

  • Provide furnishings and areas to optimize space usage of the library
  • Provide a variety of furniture types, available technology, and levels of quiet to accommodate a variety of study styles/preferences

Flip Charts

Description of Assessment Flip charts with a prompt regarding library space are posted in 2 locations in the library away from library staff, as well as online in the form of a Google Doc. Students are given 1-2 weeks to respond to the prompt. Responses are recorded and grouped into categories, then analyzed, looking for trends.

Several locations in the library are selected, including areas of the Biblical Reference Room, Large Reference Room, and Stacks, and photographed at the same time each day over a two week period. The number of students in each area are counted and compared. Photos are also analyzed for trends in seating/use. Two weeks prior to the start of each photo study, notices are placed throughout the affected areas to explain the study and the dates it will occur.
